Become a FIRST HAND WOMAN insider:

Why Depression Rocks

First Hand Woman - Sarah Michelle Brown… A la First Hand Woman

It’s that time again.

FIRST HAND WOMAN is less than a week away from starting rehearsals for the Toronto debut. I find that as all my off-stage tasks get completed and I slowly lift the different weights of responsibilities off of my shoulders, my on-stage role of “Depression” is finally beginning to call me to her side again.

Such a strange shift to start letting that sad-sad beast sit in my body again for this run. I can feel the heaviness start to hang out with me. Playing melancholy music while I work, looking at the world around me with shifting eyes…

Ah, Depression. Through her eyes, the world is not a friendly place, I cannot accomplish my dreams and there is hopelessness in every breath. So that’s the sucky part of playing this role.

Having said that, Depression also completely ROCKS, because I am so excited to reach out with her onstage again. And I really can’t wait to interact with the other characters and with the audience. Can’t wait to re-tackle this role and this play. It’s definitely one of those catch-22 things.    🙂

Now here’s where you come in. I want you to take one of the stages of loss (Denial, Bargaining, Anger, Depression or Acceptance), and spend some time in those shoes. Preferably, pick one that is the furthest away from where you’re currently at in life. Got one? Good. Now, here are your next steps:

  • Take that character for a stroll, out to dinner, to a park, etc.
  • Pay attention to the way you experience the world around you.
  • Write it down into a short ditty about what the world is like through those eyes.

Fantastic! Now, make sure to report back here and leave a comment to let me know what you discovered and how the world did or didn’t change. OR leave your short little ditty.  🙂

PS – If you don’t have your tickets yet for our Toronto debut, get them HERE. They are going pretty fast, so make sure you don’t get left out. Xoxo

And as always…

Dream up,

Sarah Michelle Brown
